EXTREME NETWORKS 5520-24X-ACDC-BASE – Layer 3 Universal Ethernet Switch
Overview
The EXTREME NETWORKS 5520-24X-ACDC-BASE is an enterprise-grade 10 Gigabit aggregation and core edge switch custom-engineered for high-density corporate enterprise networks, modern campus infrastructure backbones, and large-scale data center loops. This universal hardware platform resolves architectural rigidity by supporting dual-persona firmware initialization, enabling network engineers to deploy either Switch Engine (EXOS) or Fabric Engine (VOSS) operating environments upon setup. It establishes absolute operational readiness for multi-tier infrastructures requiring highly scalable, low-latency fiber concentration and rapid hardware provisioning.
The hardware infrastructure centers on a 1RU fixed chassis equipped with 24 unpopulated 100M/1G/10Gb SFP+ fiber access ports optimized for high-bandwidth downlinks. This specific ACDC-BASE variant is engineered as a highly adaptable power-agnostic model, configured with dual open, hot-swappable modular power supply bays that support synchronous or redundant combinations of AC and DC power plants. For high-speed horizontal scaling and resilience, the rear panel incorporates 2 unpopulated 100Gb QSFP28 stacking ports capable of driving a 200 Gbps aggregate stacking loop across up to eight chassis elements, while a front-facing Versatile Interface Module (VIM) slot supports modular uplink acceleration cards.
Designed for automated network environments, the switch natively coordinates with ExtremeCloud IQ and Extreme Platform ONE for automated cloud-managed configuration provisioning and remote telemetry without on-site command-line intervention. Hardware-enforced IEEE 802.1AE MACsec 256-bit encryption runs natively across the access ports and optional VIM uplinks, securing point-to-point physical links against active interception. Avoid utilizing this system in remote edge deployments that require direct copper-based IEEE 802.3bt PoE endpoint delivery without external injectors, or within unventilated equipment racks where the default front-to-back airflow parameters are restricted.
