APC SMX2000LV – 2000VA Rack/Tower Smart-UPS 120V
Overview :
The APC SMX2000LV is a line-interactive uninterruptible power supply designed to provide regulated 120V power and battery backup for rack-mounted and standalone IT infrastructure. It is typically deployed by infrastructure engineers and system administrators protecting servers, virtualization hosts, network switches, and storage systems where brief power interruptions or voltage instability could disrupt operations. The UPS maintains equipment uptime during outages while enabling controlled shutdown procedures for critical systems.
The system provides a rated output capacity of 1920VA / 1800W and produces a pure sine-wave output compatible with modern server-grade switching power supplies using active power factor correction. It operates within a 100–127V single-phase electrical ecosystem and connects to upstream power through a NEMA 5-20P input plug, requiring a dedicated 20-amp circuit commonly provisioned in equipment rooms and server racks.
Power distribution is handled through ten battery-backed outlets, consisting of six NEMA 5-15R, three NEMA 5-20R, and one NEMA L5-20R receptacle. This mixed outlet configuration allows the UPS to support both standard IT devices and higher-current equipment within a rack environment. Automatic voltage regulation compensates for under-voltage and over-voltage conditions without switching to battery power, preserving battery capacity for actual outage events.
The chassis supports rack or tower installation and occupies 4U of rack space in a standard 19-inch equipment rack. With a short-depth design of roughly 19 inches, the unit can be deployed in network cabinets, branch server racks, and IDF environments where deeper enterprise UPS hardware may not fit. The system weighs approximately 85 lb, so it is typically installed in lower rack positions for stability and proper weight distribution.
Integration into infrastructure monitoring platforms is supported through USB and serial communication interfaces along with a SmartSlot expansion bay for optional network management cards. When a network card is installed, administrators can monitor UPS status, configure alerts, and integrate shutdown automation with virtualization hosts and servers using SNMP-based monitoring systems.
A typical deployment places the UPS at the base of a rack supporting virtualization servers, firewall appliances, and network switching infrastructure. Under full load the UPS provides roughly 10 minutes of runtime, while lighter loads extend runtime significantly, enabling controlled shutdown or bridging short utility interruptions.
This UPS is not designed for high-density compute racks exceeding its 1800W output capacity or environments operating on 208V or 230V power distribution. Those deployments require higher-capacity or higher-voltage UPS systems intended for multi-kilowatt rack loads.
