Overview

The EXTREME NETWORKS 100G-SWDM4-QSFP100M is an enterprise-grade, short-range 100 Gigabit Ethernet QSFP28 optical transceiver custom-engineered for high-density data center core interconnects, enterprise campus backbones, and greenfield private cloud fabrics. This hardware module resolves a critical infrastructure upgrade bottleneck by enabling 100 Gbps line-rate transmission over existing duplex multi-mode fiber (MMF) infrastructure. It eliminates the expensive requirement to rip and replace legacy duplex LC cable plants with parallel MPO multi-fiber structures typical of traditional multi-mode migrations.

The physical architecture utilizes Short Wavelength Division Multiplexing (SWDM) technology enclosed within a standard pluggable QSFP28 form factor. Operating over a single standard duplex LC optical interface, the module multiplexes four independent internal optical channels across distinct windows in the 850nm to 940nm spectrum, driving each wavelength at a 25.78 Gbps NRZ data rate. The module implements a high-efficiency vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) array to sustain maximum reach profiles of 75 meters on OM3, 100 meters on OM4, and up to 150 meters on specialized wideband OM5 multi-mode optical fiber media.

Tailored for direct installation into high-performance switching fabrics, the transceiver features full native compatibility with Extreme Networks switching families, including the SLX and VDX data center platforms. Real-time diagnostic evaluation is enabled through an integrated I2C-managed Digital Optical Monitoring (DOM) system, which tracks optical tx/rx power thresholds, device operating temperatures, and supply rail variations. To guarantee bit error rate (BER) integrity across all fiber types, Host Forward Error Correction (FEC) must be actively provisioned on the host port. Avoid executing this module within single-mode fiber (SMF) structures, or inside parallel MPO-based hardware architectures without proper LC breakout media.
