Overview
The APC AP8659 is a metered rack power distribution unit designed to deliver centralized AC distribution with real‑time load monitoring for IT racks and network cabinets. Power infrastructure teams deploy this PDU where visibility into current draw and aggregate load trends is required to prevent branch overloads and support capacity planning across rack devices, without the need for remote outlet switching.
This PDU accepts a 30 A, single‑phase 200–208 V AC input feed via a NEMA L6‑30P inlet and distributes power through (12) IEC 60320 C13 outlets and (2) IEC 60320 C19 outlets. Integrated metering provides real‑time amps, volts, kW, and cumulative kWh data at the PDU level, enabling administrators to assess load distribution and set support thresholds for alerting. The unit’s display presents measured values locally and also exposes monitoring data over network interfaces.
Constructed in a 1U horizontal rackmount form factor, the AP8659 installs in standard 19‑inch cabinets where rack space is at a premium. The horizontal orientation supports rear rack placement or rail mounting depending on cabinet layout. Its mix of C13 and C19 receptacles accommodates a variety of rack equipment, including servers, network switches, storage, and other devices requiring standard IEC power connectors.
Management interfaces typically include Ethernet (HTTP/S), SNMP, and Telnet, enabling integration with centralized management platforms for unified monitoring across multiple racks. The PDU’s metering aids in capacity planning and fault isolation but does not provide individual outlet switching or sequencing — those capabilities are available in switched models if needed.
This device is suited for racks where metered power visibility is operationally required but outlet‑level control is unnecessary. It is not intended for environments requiring per‑outlet control or three‑phase distribution; such use cases are served by managed or switched PDUs with higher capabilities.
