Tripp Lite SMART500RT1U – Line‑Interactive UPS 500 VA 120 V
Overview
The Eaton SMART500RT1U is a 1U rack/tower line‑interactive uninterruptible power supply (UPS) designed to protect small servers, network switches, and IT equipment against power outages, voltage excursions, and transient surges. It is deployed by infrastructure and network engineers in wiring closets, branch offices, and small rack environments where a compact UPS solution is required for essential rack‑mounted gear. The line‑interactive topology with automatic voltage regulation (AVR) corrects brownouts and overvoltages without immediately switching to battery, preserving battery life while stabilizing output.
This model supports 120 V AC single‑phase input with a 500 VA / 300 W output capacity, suitable for moderate IT loads such as entry‑level servers, VoIP systems, and small storage units. Internal batteries are field‑replaceable and hot‑swappable, providing minimum runtime sufficient for controlled shutdowns or covering brief outages. Typical transfer time to battery is 4–6 ms, minimizing disruption to sensitive loads.
SMART500RT1U installs in 19‑inch EIA racks using included hardware or in an upright tower orientation, making it flexible for rack closets and compact cabinets where space is at a premium. It does not require specialized rack rails beyond the included front‑rail brackets.
Connectivity includes USB (HID), DB9 serial, and an optional network management card slot, enabling local monitoring, automatic shutdown scripts, and remote status reporting via SNMP or web interfaces when a WEBCARDLX card is installed. Output receptacles consist of six NEMA 5‑15R outlets (five UPS‑supported, one surge‑only), which allow segmentation of critical versus non‑critical loads.
A practical deployment example is backing up a rack containing a small server, edge firewall, and PoE switch in a branch office. The SMART500RT1U provides voltage regulation and brief battery runtime during outages, enabling graceful shutdowns or bridging to generator start.
This unit is not suitable for high‑density core data center racks or critical infrastructure requiring network management by default, high surge energy ratings, or extended runtime without external battery packs. For those environments, larger rack UPS systems with advanced management and extended runtime options are recommended.
