APC AP8931 Switched 0U Rack Power Distribution Unit
Overview
The APC AP8931 is a switched rack power distribution unit engineered to deliver controlled AC power distribution with remote outlet management for rack‑mounted IT equipment. It is deployed by data center and infrastructure teams to enable outlet‑level power control, load monitoring, and sequencing in network, server, and storage racks where remote power cycling and current tracking are operational requirements. The switched design supports administrator‑defined outlet control and load shedding to help avoid overloads and troubleshoot equipment failures without requiring physical access to the rack.
This PDU accepts 100–120 V AC input at 15 A, providing a 1440 VA (1.44 kVA) power distribution capacity from a single branch feed. It mounts in a zero‑U vertical format that attaches to the side or rear rack channel, preserving usable rack units for active devices. The unit includes eight NEMA 5‑15R output outlets fed from a NEMA 5‑15P input plug, enabling versatile connections to servers, switches, and other rack electronics that use standard power cords.
The PDU’s management and monitoring capabilities include remote access via Web, SNMP, and Telnet interfaces, which infrastructure teams use to monitor current draw, define alarm thresholds, and switch outlets on or off for power cycling or blackout response procedures. Integrated current metering provides real‑time insight into load distribution across the rack, helping avoid circuit overload conditions.
Remote outlet control can be sequenced to define power‑on/off ordering across devices, which aids in preventing in‑rush current issues or ensures proper system boot sequencing when power is restored after an outage. Some configurations also support temperature and humidity sensor ports for environmental visibility.
This model is suited for IT closets, micro data centers, and remote racks where space efficiency and remote power control are priorities. It is not intended for installations requiring higher voltage, multi‑phase, or three‑phase distribution, extensive outlet density, or devices that draw beyond the 15 A branch rating.
